Spanish translations
The Spanish language is a romance language spoken by approximately 400 million people across the globe, a fact that ranks it the second language world-wide as to the number of speakers. It is also the most widely spoken and studied of the romance languages. It is the most prevalent second language for native English speakers, particularly in the Americas, while is has a strong presence all over the world. It is the most widely learned foreign language in Central America. Spanish is one of the official languages of the United Nations, the Organisation of American States, the South American Community of Nations, and the European Union.
Spanish originated as a Latin dialect, with Arabic and other influences, sharing a similar phonological system with Italian and presenting similarities of morphology, grammar and vocabulary with that language, and also with French and Romanian. The writing systems of these languages present a marked degree of interlingual reading comprehension and, to some extent, oral comprehension.
There are important variations among the regions of Spain and throughout the Spanish-speaking Americas. Spanish speakers tend to call it “Español” when comparing it with languages of other countries, and “Castellano” when comparing it with other languages of Spain,Italy and South America.Features of Spanish phonology include lenition, diphthongation and palatalisation, phenomena also found in other Romance languages.
In today’s globalised market, we witness increased international awareness and expansion of the Spanish language in literature, film, television and music.
