The Romanian language is a Romance language spoken by approximately
25 million people, primarily in Romania and Moldova. It is the official language of Romania, Moldova and the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Serbia, while Romanian speakers can be found in many other countries as a result of emigration, from the Iberian peninsula, to the Americas and the whole of Europe. While precise numbers are not available, some estimate that 3 million Romanian speakers reside in Europe and North America.

The Romanian territory was the home of Indo-European people who were defeated by the Romans in the early 1st century. Due to its geographical isolation, Romanian was not much influenced by other Romance languages, a fact that makes it one of the most uniform languages in Europe. Romanian is, to a certain extent, influenced by Slavonic, while most of Romanian grammar and morphology is based on Latin, in addition there are some characteristics that are shared only with other languages of the Balkans and cannot be found in the other Romance languages, closest to which comes Italian.

The post-World War II emigration wave brought the Romanian language to the Americas, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, while the second major such wave, following the collapse of Communism, spread it in other parts of the world. Furthermore, the business opportunities that have recently appeared in the former eastern bloc have increased the need for Romanian translators, taking also into account the declaration of Romanian as one of the three new official languages of the European Union.
